Tāmaki Makaurau, you're a bloody legend

Tomorrow's the day.

I can't think of an ethically trickier decision than the ones our leaders have just made. I can't imagine what it is to weigh up the community that's scared for its kaumatua against the kids failing school, against the business owners losing the homes they borrowed against.

They, our leaders - and we, all of us - are balancing risk and harm and heartbreak in an impossible equation. No one wanted this, to carry this weight. I don't have the answer.

But here's something I do know. Tāmaki Makaurau, you're a bloody legend.

You've done it tough, but you held the line. You stood between all of us and the mass unrest, mass misery, mass graves that other countries have seen.

You just said, yeah nah. And you pulled it off.

It's your day, Tāmaki Makaurau. Coffee, haircuts, library books, hugs. Joy.

Reclaiming the human pleasures that seem small, until you lose them - and only then you know, because of the comfort and connection you never saw before, that they are not.

The rest of us thank you. Owe you a coffee, even.

Enjoy.
